How to do the hypertufa!

According to wiki hypertufa "is an anthropic rock made from various aggregates bonded together using Portland cement."  You can make really cool things with it including plant troughs, planters, sculptures and garden steps which was my second project ever using hypertufa :) Here are some of my favorite samples of Hypertufa work to get you turned on to the process.

Hypertufa is really easy and IT IS CHEAP!!  You can make any shape you want!  Here I will show you how to make leave garden steps!  You will need the following very cheap items that are all sold at Lowes or any other home and garden center.

Ingredients

Picture
bag of Portland cement
bag of sand or vermiculite or perlite
bag of peat moss
water
mixing container
stick or a hoe for stirring
shovel/spade
face mask
large leaves like rhubarb, hosta, elephant ear or ferns

Next you need to prepare the area for some hypertufa steps:)  Pick two large leaves from your garden plants or ask a neighbor.  I used fern and rhubarb which works really great!
Then you need to dig holes 1 1/2 inches deep to make your steps. You need to take out all the grass and try to dig them in the shape of your leaf.  Some people lay down their rhubarb leaf and cut into the ground around it with their spade.  Make sure the bottom is flat and try to smooth out the edge's and pick any greenery out of the way.

It will be a few days before your steps are ready (at least 3.)
On the third day you can spray away your leaves with a hose
but they are not ready to be walked on yet.  Wait almost a
month before that.
